The RFU County Championship entries and the initial South-West pool draws have recently been announced with GRFU teams participating in all of the Championships. The Senior Men play Devon away and then champions, Oxfordshire, at home both in May. The Women drop into Division 2 and play both Devon and Cornwall away in May followed by Hampshire at home in June. The Men U20’s play both Cornwall and Somerset away followed by Devon at home starting in late March through to May. All draw details are available on the GRFU web-site with venues TBA.
GRFU's re-appointed Men’s Head Coach, Jake McMahon, says:
“I am very excited and proud to continue to lead the Gloucestershire Men’s Team for another three seasons.
Last season we put solid building blocks in place and created a competitive & positive environment, rewarding players from around the County, with playing level being no barrier. The free-flowing, exciting and attacking style of play, which we demonstrated through the Championship, engaged not only lots of talented players but also massive support, seeing 500-plus spectators packed into Longlevens RFC for the semi-final narrowly losing to eventual Championship winners, Oxfordshire. We will look to build on the quality & professionalism of the players from last season and bring in younger, talented players and key players from across the whole County who are having a good club season, in tandem with retaining seasoned older heads.
I was most proud of the way the players responded to a new playing environment and saw the Championship as a new challenge with some using it as a stepping stone to sign for higher clubs this season and now be flourishing in their new colours. All players returned to their clubs with the honour of their names going up on their club’s County Honours Board. GRFU gave out over 15 County debuts through the Championship and with the odds stacked against us getting all the way to the semi-finals was a huge achievement. Having lost to the eventual Division 2 winners there’s fire in the belly and we look forward to a better outcome this season.
The coaching team will have a few tweaks and in some playing areas we will look to bolster and refresh. We are also hoping to get in a warm-up game before the Championship starts to give us the best chance of reaching the final at Twickenham.
I am looking forward to getting back in contact with the lads and build excitement going into the New Year and bringing back the prestige and the long lasting memories playing and coaching for Gloucestershire gives players and their club.
I would finally like to thank all the players & coaches from last season’s campaign and for their considerable efforts after a long hard club season! They’re all great lads and we had a brilliant laugh. Long may that continue again this season.”
